Sr. Scientist, Immunology

We are seeking a highly motivated, collaborative, and innovative scientist to join our Disease Biology team within the Drug Creation department. The qualified candidate will have subject matter expertise in Immunology and a solid understanding of pathomechanisms of chronic inflammatory diseases. This individual will be responsible for helping to establish and expand our preclinical disease-relevant models and will lead development efforts defining our assets’ mechanism of action and efficacy in in-vitro/ex-vivo/in-vivo settings. They will actively contribute from the bench as well as manage CROs and be responsible for the development and conduct of in vitro, ex vivo and/or in vivo work packages to support and advance Absci’s drug discovery pipeline. The successful candidate will serve as Disease Biology SME on cross-functional drug development project teams, contributing biological, and disease area insights to projects as well as delivering on disease-relevant lead characterization work packages to advance the therapeutic program.  The successful candidate will demonstrate clear and professional communication, effectively collaborate with colleagues across a highly matrixed environment, and be capable of presenting scientific results to project teams. 

  • Work in a dynamic and collaborative Disease Biology team that works closely with key stakeholders across our interdisciplinary R&D teams.
  • Coordinate, design, organize & conduct preclinical in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo studies to advance our internal therapeutic programs.
  • Generate, analyze, and interpret complex data, provide evaluation of PK-PD-efficacy relationships, exploration of PD and predictive biomarkers and elucidation of drug’s MoA.
  • Identify and evaluate (new) in vivo models and technologies to enable novel target validation and lead discovery screening, perform lab-based activities to support a variety of research efforts towards MoA understanding and therapeutic lead development.
  • Establish and manage interactions with vendors and CROs and work closely with key expertise areas to generate necessary studies and reagents for in vivo screening.
  • Serve as Disease Biology SME on multiple project teams, conduct and trouble-shoot experiments, analyze and interpret data and work cross functionally with colleagues to identify and mitigate risks and effectively advance therapeutic programs
  • Help build complex in vitro and ex vivo research and development capabilities
  • Author and review clearly articulated SoPs, study reports, and data presentations.
  • This position will be located at the Absci HQ in Vancouver, WA.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in Pharmacology, Immunology/Inflammation, Oncology, Physiology, or related disciplines with at least 5+ years of post-PhD academic and / or industry experience in immunology, immune-mediated inflammatory diseases or related field establishing direct experimental experience with complex biology of inflammatory diseases
  • Extensive experience with flow-based in-depth characterization of immune cell populations in blood and tissue samples.
  • Experience with cell-based assays, ELISA, MSD, qPCR, microscopy, histology/pathology (e.g. IF/IHC/ISH).
  • Demonstrated expertise with complex 2D/3D functional cell-based and tissue-based assays to investigate disease biology and PK/PD relationship.
  •  Experience with leveraging complex data sets to characterize and establish a drug’s therapeutic mechanisms of action
  •  Ability to be hands on and working in the lab, manage scientists, write protocols, execute studies leveraging Absci’s in house capabilities
  • Experience working with project/research teams with functional responsibility to propose strategy, analyze, interpret, and present complex data to inform decisions
  •  Ability to collaborate in writing protocols and reports
  • Outstanding communication skills with demonstrated ability to make effective presentations in a broad range of settings
  •  Detail-oriented and organized, with strong interpersonal skills for clear and effective communication

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated record of leveraging in vivo pharmacology models to explore antibody-based drug discovery.
  • Experience with therapeutics programs leading to drug candidate nomination in one or more of the following therapeutic areas: oncology, immunology / inflammation, metabolic diseases
  • Experience authoring study protocols, reports, and/or regulatory documents including IBs, IND filings, and/or NDAs
  • Experience working with complex patient-derived cell-based 2D/3D culture systems or ex vivo tissue models
  • Ability to independently generate, analyze and interpret multi-omics data sets
  • Strong statistical analysis skills and an ability to articulate findings and make recommendations from complex study results
  • Experience mentoring scientists, leading cross-functional project teams, and a track record of successful management of external teams
  • Experience working with vendors and CROs to execute studies, analyze data, and generate reports in a timely manner

The salary range for this position (Sr. Scientist - Sr. Scientist II) is $127,000 - $165,000/year. Competitive equity package applies. Pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition to equity, compensation packages include a wide range of medical, dental, vision benefits and ability to participate in our employee stock purchase plan.
